DVD Watch August, Part I
Not all DVDs in my monthly column are necessarily recommended; inclusion merely means that they are acceptable for children of a certain age. I will, however, make positive comments throughout, highlighting my top picks.
If a DVD is not labeled as having non-English subtitles or tracks, it doesn't; DVDs known to have closed captioning are marked CC. Not all DVDs mentioned have TV connections, and may just be original features and featurettes for kids.

- Big Idea releases two new titles this month. From the VeggieTales series, they are "Ballad of Little Joe" and "Esther, The Girl Who Became Queen". They do carry Christian messages, and so there is a misconception that your kid has to be Christian to enjoy or benefit from them. Not the case, as these are simply well produced movies of talking vegetables that promote everyday good morals.
- MGM releases Globehunters: Around The World In 80 Days.
- An acclaimed book series and television series have created the "Madeline" video series. MGM now brings us "My Fair Madeline", a new feature length film. When trouble ensues at the Louvre, Madeline is left with the blame. She is then sent to a London etiquette school. Her friends from the orphange arrive just in time to stop the real troublemakers, while clearing her name. (73 minutes, $14.95, CC)
- From the successful "Carmen Sandiego" geography/history series from UVA comes "No Place Like Home" and "Into the Maelstrom".
- There's been a "Wizard of Oz" cartoon or two through the years, but this UAV DVD is actually a new production. "Wizard of Oz: The Continuing Story" is a series of what are essentially episodes, compiled together. They include "Time Town", "We're not in Kansas Anymore", "Crystal Clear" and "Fearless", They Wicked Witch, it's important to note, isn't dead anymore; no explanation given in preliminary material, likely just a lack of creativity on the creators part. (88 minutes, $9.99, CC unknown)

- Most readers likely already have seen the spin-off of the Oscar nominated Jimmy Neutron Paramount Pictures feature:
This DVD includes 10 episodes, of which I believe all are new. The disc, titled "Sea Of Trouble" seems rather good. Episodes include "Raise The Oozy Scab", "The Phantom Of Retroland", "Hypno Birthday To You", "Hall Monster", "Trading Faces", "Journey To The Center Of Carl", "I Dream Of Jimmy", "Broadcast Blues", "Professor Calamitous, I Presume". Yes, if you counted nine episodes, you are right; I don't know what the tenth is called, DVDtoons.com only listed these ones. Blame them. Not me.
