New Schedule for Children's Products 2002!

© Hilary Evans

I've been thinking about my plans for next year. January 7th we're expecting a new baby. Our 3 year old is learning more everyday, and soon our 17 month old will have a whole new view of the world around her. Exhilarating, adventurous, chaotic - one thing is certain: I need to be more organized.

Part of that organization takes place here, Children's Products at Suite101. This is such a broad topic that many times I have trouble narrowing down a subject. To make things more predictable - for both author and reader - I'm creating an article schedule for 2002. The first column of each month will be dedicated to technology, the second to a toy, the third to an educational product, and the fourth to a child care item. (Yes, I'm going back to four articles a month instead of two, mainly because my son needs dancing lessons and I need more practice.)

Technology will consist of video and computer games, television programs, movies and gadgets for children. I'm hoping to do more reviews. Fortunately with two new gaming systems being released November 2001 this should be no problem.

Toys are pretty basic. Anything children tend to play with, including empty boxes, count. Although I've never spent money on packing supplies specifically for my kids, there have definitely been purchases where our money would have been better spent on Styrofoam peanuts and masking tape.

Educational Products aren't always as obvious. I would love to review home schooling curriculums but they are often extremely expensive, even when buying from a used source. In the event that I can find any companies willing to let me review a few items free of charge this may be a possibility. Until then, expect more articles on craft supplies, various lessons and learning possibilities than on official "learning" materials to appear in the third article of each month.

Child care Items is a necessary category to add from my point of view. Part of working from home is living off the benefits. Suite101 is an awesome place to work, but it isn't the highest paying publication - in print or on the web. Products that I buy specifically to review can be deducted from our taxes, and while these reviews are sure to help other mothers and fathers, this is also one thing that may really benefit our family.

As I said earlier, I'm concentrating on making life a lot more organized. We have a new baby on the way but not much more income than we had this same time last year. I know there are many folks in our situation that can understand. This schedule is for you the reader, by letting you know in advance what will be coming you can more wisely use your surfing time. This schedule is also for me the writer, helping me become more focused and offering motivation to make it until next year.

I look forward to your information. It sounds very useful. You certainly will be busy, with a new baby and all. I haven't read all your articles yet but did read the one on Hanukah and enjoyed it.
