Discovery Toys®: Are they really all that?I searched far and wide before finding an at-home business that really worked for me. I honed in on my previously existent talents and became a freelance writer. Some months it does little more than pay the service fees on my bank account, but it does a great deal for me as a person. Needless to say it took some time before I'd realized that what I needed had been right here all along, and tried several "biz ops" before finding success in myself. Among those opportunities was Discovery Toys®. I can't remember exactly what the ad was toting. Being able to make money while working with children at home maybe? I liked the idea of selling a product I would definitely use...err, I mean, that my kids would use. Yes, that's it. The majority of the toys looked very interesting, and with all of the money people were able to save it seemed like a good deal. Unfortunately $24.99 seems like $24.99 when it's printed in a catalog regardless of what the actual price is. The most frustrating thing about Discovery Toys® is that the price marked on promo material is hardly ever what people are expected to pay. Sometimes I wonder if the company doesn't change prices daily just to confuse people. The toys themselves differ in quality, and more importantly, how interesting they are to children. If you are judging just by the catalog, I would steer towards the toys that already have awards or are new items. The latest catalog has 50 or so new toys. If there is something in particular you want to work on with your child, the Toy Finder in the first few pages of each catalog will be of help to you. The Toy Finder is split into 3 age groups (birth to 3, from 3 years, and from 5 years) and addresses 7 different skills the toys help your children develop. In theory anyway... These skills are sensory, fine motor, gross motor, language, social emotional, creativity, and thinking/problem solving. Even though Discovery Toys® turned out not to be the career of my dreams, I keep up as a consultant because I do buy some of the toys for my own children. The Fall is an excellent time to bring in extra pocket money, especially when the sales give me additional savings on the toys I am buying. Of the toys we have purchased, not everyone has been a winner. However, based on the GREAT ones that we've purchased, here is my list for the Award Winners from Discovery Toys® Fall 2001. If you know a consultant and one of these sounds interesting to you, contact her. She might have a model you can get your hands on...
