Happy Birthday Strata!!!!!

THERE ARE WAYS TO INCREASE MILK PRODUCTION!!!

This is the BIG secret. Not many people address this one either, basically because it admits that women have supply problems. I detest the "95% of women are physically able to breastfeed" statistic. There's more at work than mammary glands when breastfeeding is concerned! Women struggle emotionally and mentally when it comes to breastfeeding, especially when they feel unsupported.

FENUGREEK is an herbal supplement that will naturally increase supply. You will know when your milk is in when your chest feels especially tight. This is called engorgement. If this doesn't happen within three or four days, or happens once with not much to follow, using fenugreek might be a good idea. REMEMBER THIS ISN'T QUALIFIED MEDICAL ADVICE! You may want to consult your doctor before trying anything new.

I took fenugreek 3 times a day, 3 pills at a time. However, some people take more. You are supposed to take as much as you need to start smelling "like molasses." I don't know if I ever smelled that way but my milk supply went up after two days. I used it the first three weeks I breastfed. However, it should be mentioned that fenugreek "aggravated asthma symptoms in some women and has lowered blood glucose levels in some women with diabetes," according to http://www.breastfeeding.com .

Buying or renting an electric, double pump can help tremendously. Generally pumping for 15 minutes after the baby is done nursing each time will boost supply. Pumps take awhile to get used to, so don't feel discouraged if you don't get results right away. Double pumping might feel kind of funny at first, but it tricks your body into thinking you are supporting twins and really helps to make more for the baby.

BREASTFEEDING CAN BE PRIVATE

If you practice being discrete at home, there is no reason why anyone has to know you are breastfeeding in public. NURSING CLOTHES are especially helpful, but not necessary. They are not the potato sacks they used to be. A lot of nursing wear is pretty chic these days. Patterns hide leaking better than solid colors or stripes, but by using NURSING PADS (cloth! cloth! cloth!) you can avoid a lot of those type of things.

Some women choose to use a baby carrier to aid in breastfeeding privately in public places. Some use breastfeeding tents, other use large blankets. Unfortunately a lot of the newer devices draw more attention
