Our daughter is turning 1 today. It's a mixed celebration. I'm so happy she's with us! She's such an awesome little girl - determined and ambitious, loving and completely adorable. On the other hand I am very sad that her first year is already over. Time really does go too quickly.
One thing I am especially sad about is that we didn't even make half of our goal of nursing for two years. It all comes back to me. Because I've learned things that could have helped us continue, I'd like to share them with you today. I am NOT a doctor, midwife, or lactation consultant. You should NOT take this as qualified medical advice, but as the opinion of one mother who wishes she had more information while she was fighting the good fight. BREASTFEEDING IS HARD AND MAY HURT LIKE HECK This is not what most advocates will tell you. They will lie, and tell you it shouldn't hurt. You'll try, it will hurt, and you'll think you're doing something wrong. You aren't. Don't worry, if it hurts then everything is going according to plan. I think breastfeeding is devised to help you get used to the rest of parenting. :D I would not recommend massaging your chest, or using rough materials on it, before giving birth. Talk to a lactation consultant and you will find out that it doesn't help condition you at all. Stimulation can cause early labor, and sore body parts will be even more uncomfortable after baby starts using them. One thing that will help is LANSINOH. It is a miracle salve that if applied for a few weeks before baby is born, and during breastfeeding, will help ready your body. It also helps with pain when you first start. Some people experience minor discomfort for one or two weeks while other people struggle with breastfeeding for months. Everyone is different! If you are breastfeeding I would recommend "So That's What They're For! : Breastfeeding Basics" by Janet Tamaro. I'm kicking myself that I didn't read this sooner! It's funny, helpful, and is SUPPORTIVE of moms whether they stay home or work outside of the home. If you are having trouble with bruising or a lot of pain, you might need to try a different nursing position. Many hospitals now offer free breastfeeding counseling for new mothers. There are also breastfeeding groups in many communities which can be contacted through the maternity unit at your hospital, or through your midwife or clinic. Lactation consultants are a great benefit to any breastfeeding mother, and may even be covered under your insurance policy.
