SideWalk Chalk Extraordinaire

Sidewalk chalk is a relatively inexpensive, fun way to spend warm days outside. It can also be used indoors to break rainy day doldrums. There are several formulas online you can use for making your own sidewalk chalk, but depending on the formula it can be cheaper (not to mention safer) to buy ready-made chalks.

My favorite of the ready-mades come from a little known company, Walbuck Crayon Co. http://www.crayista.com/ The site is far from fancy, but the wide range of chalks they offer is worth the stop. I especially like their glow-in-the-dark sidewalk chalk, or the glitter chalk. The price may be more expensive than homemade, but the options make up for it.

Walbuck also cares about their customers. All items are non-toxic and washable. Besides the glow-in-the-dark and glitter, they offer neon, pastel, swirl and a rainbow pack of sidewalk chalk.

When it comes to good, old fashioned colors represented by quality, RoseArt would be a good place to look. http://www.roseart.com/shop/index.asp They have a wonderful website. There are regular contests, project database searchable by age group, party plans, and more. They offer a wide range of products and information.

We use RoseArt chalks. They are long-lasting, durable, and wash off easily. They are less expensive than other brands. In general, I like all RoseArt products (except markers..for those head for Mr Sketch). A good buy, and a wonderful product.

But, what about the Big Dog? Crayola does make sidewalk chalk, but they are overpriced compared to other brands. Crayola also seems to be confused about their own age guidelines. One pack of sidewalk chalk is labeled "Up to 5" another pack of the SAME chalk, 5 pieces added, is for "4 and up."

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the Crayola website. http://www.crayola.com/ It also has a craft database, information on all sorts of things for kids, teachers, and parents. I have just become disgruntled with their prices and a long list of ridiculous products. (MORE ON THIS IN THE FUTURE)

Some things to keep in mind about sidewalk chalk. Children should be at least 3 before they use it unsupervised. Kids have a way of taste testing anything that comes in a variety of colors, and even though most brands are non-toxic it's not good to eat it. There is also the risk of the wrong things being chalked on, like walls.

The other thing to remember about sidewalk chalk is that it is water soluble, or washable. This means that when it comes into contact with water the chalk will get mushy and wash away, whether you want it to or not. Always keep your chalk indoors, stored somewhere it wont get wet.
