Gun Locks

Sixteen children are killed everyday by a gun from someone's home. Keeping a lock on your gun could very well save a life, and it doesn't have to be expensive or inconvenient.

At this time there are three basic locks: combination, ring/wristband, and finger print. They range in price from a handful of dollars to a few hundred. Lock manufacturers are concentrating on creating locks that are durable, while fast and easy to remove.

Combination locks can either be built into your gun or can clip on like a paddle lock. Most work by touch for easy removal in the dark. Combination locks are usually the least expensive.

Ring/wristband locks work a bit differently. Unless in close range of a certain ring or wristband, the gun is unable to fire. Using a magnetic field or computer chip the gun is ready to be fired when being held by the right person. This is a good system as long as whoever stole the gun, or whoever has found it and is playing with it, did not also find the ring or wristband. Pricing is moderate.

The third type of lock, the finger print identification, is by far the safest method when it comes to violent crime. It would mean the only people able to fire a gun would be the intended users. Pricing for finger print locks can be as low as $50 up to a few hundred.

Americans have the opportunity to own personal firearms. Along with that privilege comes the (often unwritten) responsibility of protecting others from your lethal weapon. Gun locks are an especially easy way to help protect your family and neighbors from being the victim of violence. It doesn't have to be expensive, it doesn't have to be inconvenient. It doesn't have to be your child.
