Musicals have always been a wonderful way for parents to introduce their children to one of theatre's most entertaining activities. Besides the magic of costumes, sets, special effects and live entertainment, musicals include songs with catchy rhythms, fun lyrics and great dance numbers.

Popular choices continue to come from Disney including "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King". Old favorites such as "Annie", "The Sound of Music" and other classics play as revivals all over the world.

But, did you know there's a whole lot more in the world of musical theatre for kids?

Opening March 24th is a unique new show called, "Fred Garbo Inflatable Theatre Co". Starring Fred Garbo and Brazilian ballerina Daielma Santos, this production, unitilizing parachute cloth to make other characters, will engage any child's imagination.

The newest fairy tale adaptation is "Rumple Who", based on the familiar tale of Rumpelstiltskin, touted by critics as a delightful revival.

For something a little different, there's "The Big Stew", a musical starring four vegetables who wish to stay organic. This show is presented by the Magic Bridge Theatre Co.

"The Little Lame Prince" is a musical based on Dinah Maria Mulik Craik's children's novel and is a wonderful story of self-discovery.

If your kids like puppets, why not try "The Parrot"? Combining music, puppetry and drama, this is the tale of a parrot who must save a princess from an evil king.

School age kids will enjoy "The People Garden", a story about a substitute kindergarten teacher and the lessons she learns from her pupils. Featuring a cast of child actors, this one is sure to please.

For a continuous season of children's theatrical performances, parents should be aware of TheatreWorks/Usa. Based in New York, this non-profit theatre company tours to 49 states and offers summer theatre camps and summer theatre. website: http://www.playbill.com/twusa/html/

With all these new and wonderful productions playing currently (and many more to come), parents can expose their children to the wonderful world of musical theatre.
