Childhood disintegrative disorder, Asperger's syndrome, Rett's syndrome. These are all diagnoses that fall under the category of autism. They may or may not be "facets" of autism but they have similar characteristics.
Research moves slowly and at this point there is no cure for these conditions. Headway is being made, however. Take for example the idea that at one time it was the parents (and some parents have found that doctors have this attitude yet today) particularly the mother, who was at fault for their child behaving in this way. Some people may think that the children are unloved or disciplined improperly. However, this is not the case. The problem may lie with neurological problems or hormonal imbalances. Autistic children have trouble communicating with others - they are unable to communicate effectively verbally and socially. Many may seem to be living in their own world. Some research indicates that while being similar, childhood disintegrative disorder is not related to autism. It occurs in toddlerhood rather than in earlier stages. I am not an authority on this subject but I do find it very interesting. I have attempted to locate some sites which are informative as to what these conditions are and the treatment as well as sites which may be of interest to parents of children with these conditions who are looking for support and ideas for education and treatment.
