Hope There'll Be More of that Moorchild!Yes, once again, ladies and gentlemen, the Newbery Honor has gone to another, very deserving book. The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw, was not only an entertaining read, it was wildly imaginative and put a whole new spin on faerie ("Folk" as they are called in this book) legend! The ties are evident from the beginning, when young Moql is ostracized from her magical home in the "Mound" and sent to live with humans. She is switched, as is legendary of faerie kind, with a human baby and possessing the same classic aversion to iron, salt, and other such wards against the mischievous Folk. Trapped in an unfamiliar world and estranged from everything she ever loved, Saaski, as her new human parents name her, must learn to try to fit in. Because the human world is a hostile place for people who are different... This book has a strong central female character, who learns to persevere over the ridicule in both Folk and human society. Saaski/Moql is a bright little girl of talent and courage. Throughout the story, she is trying to "find" herself. Saaski demonstrates the ability to find an identity and a place in the world, even if you don't "have" one to begin with. And who isn't curious about about how the Folk feel about the whole situation? So if you are fascinated by legends, tales of courageous young women, the Moors, the Folk, or are simply looking for a good read, this is the book for you! On a scale of one to ten, this book gets a very enthusiastic nine!
