The Simmering Cimorene

I first learned of Patricia C. Wrede's popular "Enchanted Forest Chronicles" when the first book of the series, Dealing with Dragons, was read aloud to me when I was in about fourth grade.

Since then, I've read the book at least five times, and have added the entire series to my personal collection. Dealing with Dragons is definitely in my list of top ten favorite fantasy books, children's or adult, and that has always been because its main character, the daringly defiant Princess Cimorene.

Cimorene is one of my absolute favorite literary characters of all time. Her stubborn insistence of going her own way, which usually involves defying the norm, her cleverness and no-nonsense attitude even in the strangest of situations make her come to life in a way that few authors can duplicate. I have enjoyed reading of her fiery personality more than of Ella (Ella Enchanted) or Matthius Redwall. She is probably one of the most interesting characters in all of fantasy literature.

And who couldn't love a story that begins with the princess volunteering to be captured by a dragon?

Dealing with Dragons is a story full of non-stop action, adventure, and surprises! From talking frogs who aren't princes to dragons with allergies to disgruntled jinn to fairly clueless knights, one finds themself wondering what could possibly come next!

An exciting cast combined with some very entertaining and humorous exploits make this book just as much fun to read the tenth time as the first.

Yet another masterpiece by the very talented Patricia C. Wrede.

So if your interests or that of your children tend toward books with a strong female character and a good farce on the traditional fairy tale, you'll enjoy this book immensely. I know I did!

On a scale of one to ten, I give this book a nine and a half.

Happy reading!-Mel
