Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Zapping the Masses

If you haven’t heard of J.K. Rowling and her new Harry Potter series explosion, I have only one question:

What rock are you living under?

Since it’s hardcover debut in September of 1998, the Harry Potter series, beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, has taken the United States and the United Kingdom by storm.

A brief description (since I know most of you are going to run out and procure a copy the moment you finish reading this article : ) ) of some of the action would probably be appreciated about now. However, if you want to know the whole story, you’ll have to read it for yourself.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a children’s fantasy novel about a boy named Harry Potter, marked by a lightening scar on his forehead, who has been raised from infancy in the world as we perceive it, then suddenly receives and invitation to join the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at the age of eleven. Harry, who had been ground under the heel of his domineering uncle and pummeled by his spoiled cousin from the moment he had moved in with them, suddenly found himself a celebrity in a world of magic, mayhem, and a very entertaining game called Quidditch.

And that’s just the beginning. From magic wands to unicorns, cloaks of invisibility to life-sized chess, the fascinating fun never stops. It is a rare and talented author who can keep readers from six to sixty years old completely enthralled. With her refreshing style, creative ideas, and uniquely British tang, it’s no wonder that Rowling’s series has risen to fame as a national bestseller.

While I was reading it, I found that I literally could not put it down, and neglected homework, laundry, and several promising television programs to spend four hours straight hanging on every word, sometimes pacing through rooms during scenes of nail-biting suspense, other times perched on the edge of a chair, barely daring to move at all. And the way I can always tell that the book is phenomenal is that at least once while I’m reading, I will spontaneously leap to my feet and squeal with glee. Call me crazy, but it actually happens. Ask my parents.

I must have done this at least three times during the course of the book, and have recommended it to my mother, cousins, and anyone else who will listen.

On a five star system, I would give it a whole-hearted five and a half!
