ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS FOR AUTISM

As many of you already know, Autism is a neurological disorder that my family struggles with. As I am seeking ways to deal effectively with my 6 year old daughter, there are some successful alternative treatments I would like to share, in hopes to make it a little easier for other families.

There seems to be an association between gastrointestinal and brain function in patients with autistic behavior, which leads us to the first known alternative to the treatment of Autism. Secretin is a neurotransmitter (a chemical messenger) and one of the hormones that controls digestion. Secretin receptors are coded on human chromosome 2, composed of 27 amino acids and is secreted by cells in the digestive system when the stomach empties. Within 5 weeks of a secretin infusion, a significant improvement of the children's gastrointestinal symptoms was observed, as was a dramatic improvement in their behavior, manifested by improved eye contact, alertness, and expansion of expressive language. Secretin, a 100% natural hormone derivitive, is usually used to assist in the diagnosis of GI disorders, specifically, those dealing with the pancreas. It is true that for some unexplained reason, some non verbal autistic children have started speaking while being introduced to secretin, something that was totally unexpected, and still unexplained. Introduced into the body by infusion, it is a 3 minute process, and is usually repeated monthly, but as of now, no definite information is listed for dosages, uses, adverse reactions, or anything when used as a therapy for Autism.

During my own search I came across another natural alternative measure I intend to try on my daughter, and at a later date I will report the results.

DMG (Dimethylglycine) is a natural occuring food substance in the body, and increases oxygen to the brain, aiding in better functioning of brain parts. If taken 100 mg per day, parents from my town have reported noticeable differences in their Autistic children. It has been found that children with Autism may be deficient in vitamin B6, leading to the next part of alternative treatments for Autism. 150 mg of vitamin B6 per day (maximum), along with calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and a B complex vitamin supplement are supposed to result in successful control of Autistic behaviours, including, concentration, eye contact and communication, as well as hyperactivity. Gingko Biloba is another suggested substance as it increases circulation and functioning in the brain.

If any of my readers are similar to myself, you are willing to try any viable, safe method to help your Autistic child reach their full potential. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and I would be be happy to report results from parents who try one of the above methods of alternative treatment for Autism. Together, we can make a difference, and perhaps help unlock the key to the how an Autistic child's brain and thought patterns work.
