If JA has severely affected a child's jaw, there may be poor chin growth. An Orthodontist may recommend a mouth splint to be worn. Surgical procedures can correct this problem once the disease is in remission. The child's doctor may seek the advice of an Orthodontist for recommendations regarding these procedures. JA of the jaw can make complicated dental work a problem. A child's dentist should be told that a child has arthritis so that they can give the child's teeth special attention. It should also be strongly encouraged to have the child practice good dental care. As JA frequently affects a child's neck and jaw, it may make general anesthesia difficult, and is advisable that an anesthetist see a child with JA before planning any type of operation.

As with any disease, a child with JA can live a full, normal life with very little limitations if the proper amount of encouragement, acceptance, and care is given by the parents, friends, teachers and doctors to a child suffering with this most painful of disorders.

* In closing, I am strongly suggesting readers check out the ADD article on the Special Needs Issues site by editor Keenan Waller. It addresses a recent news story that concerns a child who died of liver damage arising from the use of medications in the treatment of ADD. It proves something I have continued to stress, parents should take the time to become informed about every aspect of a child's illness, because even the medicine can kill them if the disease doesn't. Check out the Special Needs Issue section, it is excellent and really worth a look. *
