Observation of a child, particularly if displaying a limp or complaining of discomfort in the knee or hip area, is important for early diagnosis.

When a child goes to the doctor with symptoms listed above, a medical history and physical exam are carried out. If Legg-Perthes Disease is suspected, an x-ray of the hip is taken and other special tests that can be done may include an ultrasound, CAT scan, MRI (a non-invasive test where radio frequency energy and a powerful magnetic field is used to provide images of the affected areas) or a radiomuclide scan that is done by injection of radioactive isotopes into the child which is absorbed into the affected areas and then images taken.

As far as treatment for Legg-Perthes Disease is concerned, an over-the-counter painkiller such as Aspirin, Acetaminophen, or Ibuprophen is suggested for any minor discomfort. And for stronger pain, the doctor will probably prescribe a stronger medication. Heat, in the form of warm compresses, heating pads, whirlpools, heat lamps, or ultrasound, also helps deal with the pain and discomfort. Other methods of dealing with the effects of this disease include bed rest, single- or double-leg casts, braces, or surgery. If a child is overweight, it is wise for a child with this disease to reduce their weight to alleviate any extra stress or pressure that would be put on the affected joints.

Information and support for Legg-Perthes Disease was very hard to find. I am hoping if there are any readers that are dealing with it, they will consider adding their e-mail address to my pen pal service. Together we can build a support network of information and resources for this unfamiliar condition, making it easier for children and families to cope.
