Fortunately, through the efforts of an auto mechanic who worked close to where the gang performed its illegal activities, and thanks to the work of the pastor of the family's church, Jackie was persuaded to leave the gang and direct his energy towards more profitable ends.

Those ends took him to college for three years, where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. And the whole world is aware of where that led--to a reputation as an athlete that, judging by the number of websites devoted to him, is still growing today.

WEB SITES

Most of the web sites I found do not talk about Jackie Robinson's childhood--actually even most books about him tend to ignore his childhood and focus on his baseball career. Date and place of birth, and something about his father leaving and his mother taking the family to California are the only facts mentioned in most places. Therefore I have included other sites that have good information about the rest of Jackie's life.

http://www.afroam.org/history/Robinson/i... Jackie Robinson (5 stars) This site gives an excellent summary of Jackie Robinson's life, with a number of pictures included. The focus of the site it on the integration of blacks into professional baseball, which of course is what Jackie is known for as much as--if not more than--his baseball prowess.

http://www.sound.net/~vivian/jackie2.html Stealing Home: A Tribute To Jackie Robinson (5 stars) This site takes you to five articles about Jackie, focusing mostly on his momentous baseball career. The articles are succinct and well written.

http://www.utexas.edu/students/jackie/ The Jackie Robinson Society (4 stars) This is an excellent site dealing with Jackie and baseball. It does not contain an actual biography, however, and the links given are, with one exception, focused on his baseball career. However, the site owners need to update their links. Many of them could not be found.

http://www.aafla.com/Publications/Specia... Jackie Robinson, The First Man In (3 stars) A brief biography and a copy of an official, signed PR photograph.

http://library.thinkquest.org/3427/data/... Jack Roosevelt Robinson (Jackie) (3 stars) Short biography and a chart of a few facts about Jackie.

http://blackhistory.eb.com/micro/506/89.... Robinson, Jackie (2.5 stars) Short article from the "Encyclopedia Britannica" Black History website. Less than I would expect from the Britannica.

http://baseball-almanac.com/players/p_ro... Baseball Almanac (2 stars) If all you are interested in are Jackie's baseball stats, then this is the site for you.

http://darter.ocps.k12.fl.us/classroom/w... Jackie Robinson: American Legend (2 stars) Three short paragraphs, and the sentence about his father is inaccurate.
