Childhood Abuse & NeglectOne deeply concerned childfree person commented: "I can't get this horrible story out of my mind. The idiot mother who should never had gotten custody of her kids. The way this nice little kid died (eaten to death, I understand, not simply mauled -- the pathologist said the boy was alive through the whole attack). This kind of parent is just the tip of the iceberg, I daresay. When this country is ready to quit baby worshipping and seeing all mothers as angelic madonnas and choosing to see the "aberrations" as mere flukes, then maybe it will come to realize that only RESPONSIBLE parenting should be encouraged. Far too many so-called parents should never have had kids in the first place, but we're still at a place where it is considered abnormal and freakish to not want kids (after all, that stalwart of modern women, "Ms" magazine, seems to see women in only two categories based on the stories they write about -- mommies or lesbians)." And another added, "I doubt that this woman (I can't use the term mother because she obviously doesn't mother or parent) gave any more thought to becoming a parent than an animal in heat would. The difference is that most animals are better parents/mothers to their offspring and most will protect, feed and try to care for them once they've been born. That poor kid. From what's been written about him it sounds like he was likely to have been one to have overcome his environment and family and gone on to be a decent adult." Whether you agree with these opinions or not, it does bear thinking about. If society was more accepting and promoted the option of choosing not to have children, perhaps there would be fewer of these atrocious child abuse cases.
