Fiction
Earth by David Brin Amazon reader review: "By 2038, Earth's population has grown to over ten billion, natural resources are even more depleted than they are today, and many people think that the population is on the verge of a massive crash. Brin's depiction of the way that various sectors of society deal with this concept is complex and fascinating." No Kidding by Wendy Tokunaga Amazon Reader Review: "For those of you that aren't child-free this is simply an enjoyable story, set in a beautiful city with interesting and all too familiar characters! Who knows, you may even get an insight into the lives of some of your friends." [NOTE: Detailed review of this novel in my next CF article, with an exploration of why there aren't more positive fictional childfree characters.] CHILDREN'S BOOK World Population (Living for the Future) by Nance Lui Fyson Reading level: Ages 9-12 Other Suggestions If you have neices and nephews, here are more suggestions by childfree people. Melanie McMillan says, "I think I will give my neices/nephews and cousins a nice card with a note explaining that a donation to the Red Cross has been made in their name and the money will go to help children who have lost their homes in a disaster." Another childfree woman says, "We give a very modest gift every year under $20, and then we roll any other cash we might have been tempted to spend into an education IRA. We figure if we can save this money for her by the time she's eighteen. . . that's a good gift." I think that savings bonds are a good idea, as well as simply some cash -- with maybe a small token gift for the youngsters. I gave cash and gift certificates several times, and my neices/nephews seemed to like that, for they could choose whatever they wanted within the cash limitation. If you have good suggestions, please post them in the message section below. And last, Merry Christmas to all. Let's try to remember that being childfree is a gift we have given ourselves and the world's resources . . . and we certainly owe no one an apology!
