Ah, it's almost that wondrous time of year...the time when holidays bring all the family together. While this can be a happy time for some childfree people, it can also be stressful for others, particularly if you've split with your biological family -- or simply live too faraway for the trip back. If you have decided you might like alternatives to the family-oriented gatherings this year, I'll make some suggestions for childfree Thanksgiving or Christmas Holidays.
Oh yes, imagine it: There you (and possibly your mate) sit on a beautiful, tranquil beach, the ocean waves lapping at the shore and just as you are about to drift off into dreamy contemplation...you hear...the squeals and yells of children. This is bound to snap you out of your reverie and shatter what you thought was to be a childfree holiday escape. Not exactly what you had in mind, is it? So what to do? Why not try finding some travel lodgings that cater specifically to the childfree. What's that you say? Never heard of such a place? Sure there are...but you will need to do a bit of research. The internet is an excellent means of finding such locations, and you can begin at Grown-up Getaways. I discovered that some Bed & Breakfasts will allow only children over certain ages, or state specifically no children, adults only, or not suitable for children. Karen, a married childfree woman, said, "One Christmas we stayed in Mendocino, California. This is definitely not a cheap stay, most Bed & Breakfasts start out at close to a $125/night and skyrocket. The restaurant situation is more challenging because of fewer in numbers. I would highly recommend when making your lodging reservations that you or the innkeeper make it for Christmas Eve and Christmas night dinner. This is one of the few times that staying at a Bed & Breakfast paid off for us. We arrived on Christmas Eve having already had dinner, breakfast was there, but there was nothing open in town for lunch except one deli. I highly recommend having snacks on hand for that lunch. Lots to do in town except Christmas Day where the only thing to do is walk the headlands along the ocean, drive up or down the coast, or drive inland a bit. There are lots of shops and art galleries and bookstores open the rest of the time. Also, many of the Bed & Breakfasts are great for just hanging out and catching up on all of those books you want to read." Go To Page: 1 2
