Evaluation Procedure: This area will list how each objective or skill will be measured. The procedures listed could include specific tests, observations, student portfolios, etc.
Special Education and Related Services: This will detail what special accommodations are being made for your child. These might include counseling and special instruction. Related services are things like special transportation that might be necessary.
Time Frame and Personnel: For each of the special services required, the school must detail the hours and times and days of these services and when they might be expected to end.
Accommodations: Any special accommodations that are needed by your child will be listed here. They might include special equipment or assistive technology devices.
General Education Services and Non-Academic Activities: Just because your child has a disability doesn't mean that he or she can't participate in some of the normal school activities that are appropriate. This section will list these appropriate activities and address socialization with other mainstream students.
Once you have an IEP drawn up, it is important to share it with everyone who takes part in your child's education. The teachers and providers of the special services need to be informed and aware of the IEP so they can measure it's progress and effectiveness. For more detailed information on IEPs and how the process works, see the website developed by Harley A. Tomey, III. He is a learning disabilities specialist for the Office of Special Education and Student Services at the Virginia Department of Education and Student Services.
