Next, make a list of behaviors you want to encourage. Clearing the table without being asked, completing the chores on time, getting up for school without a hassle, and using good table manners are all possibilities. Remember that you are not giving tokens merely for performing normal household functions. Simply doing the chores is already required. I don't believe in paying my children for doing their chores, I believe that instead, children should get a nominal allowance simply because they are part of the family. Being part of the family requires them to perform their chores anyway. The focus of the token economy is to emphasize the 'extras' that your child can do to make life more enjoyable for everyone in the family.

Make sure to give generously for these positive behaviors. If your teen remembers to take the garbage without being asked, give him plenty of tokens. It is your goal to provide enough tokens that your child will have enough to buy all her regular privileges plus a couple of extras. Remember; don't think negative, think positive, and reward, reward, reward.

Next, distribute enough currency to get your children through a couple of days without any shortages. If they usually would spend 1000 tokens to go roller skating, to a friend's house after school, and get TV and video game time, give them at least that many tokens. This will give your child or teen a few days to become accustomed to the system, and decide her priorities. Make it clear that this is a one-time gift, and that after this time, they will be responsible for earning their own tokens.

Finally, be consistent, and determined. Give the token economy time to make a difference in your child's behavior. Therapists and inpatient hospitals as an effective, positive means of changing behavior commonly use the token economy. It will work for your family, just give it time, and don't give up. Remember to be consistent, and be prepared for flexibility in the original plan. It will also be helpful if you have support while going through the transition. Join an email support group, and let the group know what you are doing. They will be able to offer suggestions and advice for any situations, as they arrive. Good Luck, and feel free to contact me and let me know how it goes.

Dear Sheri-
I really enjoyed this article. I find it applicable for all parents. Now, if only my child were old enought to understand...! :)
Thanks, and I'll be back soon.
