Celebrating Children

Spring brings with it several celebrations of children and their caregivers.

Week of the Young Child

April 1- 7

Sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children http://www.naeyc.org

This year's theme is "Early Childhood: Where Our Future Begins"

The Week of the Young Child is an annual event organized to bring attention to the "needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs." While NAEYC chooses the dates and theme for the Week of the Young Child, celebrations and events are organized locally. Visit the web site to see how you can get involved in your community.

April is Prevent Child Abuse Month

Sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse America

http://www.preventchildabuse.org

Prevent Child Abuse America National Office
P.O. Box 2866 Chicago, IL 60690-9950

Phone: 1-800-CHILDREN

Visit the web site to discover how you can celebrate the wonder of a child by working to protect all children. Find links to state chapters and other supports for parents and caregivers. Available tip sheets for parents include "Advice for New Moms and Dads", "Protecting Your Toddler at Home", "Recognizing Child Abuse" and "Ten Ways to Prevent Child Abuse" among others.

From the web site:

Most child abuse occurs in the family home. Parents, siblings and visitors can all inflict abuse. To help prevent child abuse, you can:

  • Be a nurturing parent!
  • Help a friend, neighbor or relative if they are having difficulty with their child(ren).
  • Get involved - advocate for services to help families.
  • Volunteer at a local child abuse program.
  • Help to develop parenting resources at your local library.

National Provider Appreciation Day May 11

http://www.providerappreciation.org

1-888-3-FIRST-1 or send e-mail to info@providerappreciation.org

A yearly event organized to recognize child care providers everywhere, this day is supported by groups in all 50 states as well Canada, Europe and Asia.

From the web site: The child care profession at large is one of the most under-recognized and underpaid professions in the country and yet early childhood is the most critical time of development for our children and our future. A day of recognition for providers is long overdue. Parents with children in child care are encouraged to take this day to show their child care provider how much they appreciate them. It takes a special person to work in this field and their contribution to the quality of family life frequently goes unnoticed.

Ideas for Parents:

  • Get together with other parents to create a surprise
