Long-term and Degree Courses in Celtic Languages: The Rest of the World

© Kelly Vincent

Apparently more universities used to offer Celtic courses than now. One of my German friends who is currently studying in Berlin told me about how she looked for the Celtic department at her university after returning from a year studying Gaelic in Scotland, only to find that the entire department consisted of a door, which was locked and appeared to lead to a room approximately the size of a closet.

There are still a few courses, however. I expected there to be more in Australia and New Zealand. Maybe there are more, but they are just very well hidden on their websites... Often, Celtic topics and departments are slow to get on the Web, so who knows. The other problem I had in researching this section is that I don't read French, German, Dutch, etc. So I have listed links here, and left out descriptions where I could not understand them.

Australia

University of Sydney

The Centre for Celtic Studies offers both an undergraduate degree and postgraduate degrees in Celtic Studies, which incorporate study of Irish and/or Welsh language. An MA in Celtic Studies is available over two years and involves a dissertation, and a PhD and an MPhil are offered as research degrees.

Germany

Humboldt University, Berlin

This university has a Celtic Department within its Institute for English and American Studies. They appear to offer courses in Irish, Welsh and possibly the other Celtic languages.

Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitaet Bonn

This university offers an MA in Celtic Studies, which appears to include study of Irish, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Breton.

Philipps-Universität, Marburg

The Department of Comparative Linguistics offers an MA in Comparative Linguistics that can involve Celtology, and they may also allow PhDs in Celtology.

Austria

Universitaet Innsbruck

The Linguistics department has several faculty who specialize in Celtic topics, and apparently you can study several Celtic languages in the course of an MA degree in Linguistics.

France

Université de Bretagne Occidentale (Brest)

They have a department of Celtic Studies and a Center for Breton Research.

Université Charles de Gaulle

They may have a Celtic department. Try looking through the main site if you read French.

The Netherlands

Utrecht University

This university offers degrees in the study of Celtic languages and cultures, with a concentration on Irish and Welsh languages. See this page, and click on 'General information for foreign students' for information in PDF format in English. You can find a short blurb about the Celtic studies opportunities in this document. And if you read Dutch, I'm sure you can find more information on the university's main page.
