Long-term and Degree Courses in Celtic Languages: Ireland and the United KingdomDublin Institute for Advanced Studies The School of Celtic Studies is a center for research on Celtic studies, with a strong focus on Irish. They do not appear to offer any degrees, but they do provide annual scholarships for research being carried out in the school, so it may be worth looking into. National University of Ireland, Galway The Faculty of Celtic Studies offers undergraduate degrees in Celtic Studies and Irish. Classes are available in Irish, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Breton. A 1-year taught MA is available in Irish Studies through the Centre for Irish Studies. The focus is not on the language, but the course does require learning Irish, and there is a required dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words. The Faculty of Celtic Studies offers several postgraduate degrees. A MA in Irish (Modern, Middle and Early) can be done either as a 1-year taught course with a small dissertation. The following research degrees are also available in Irish (Modern, Middle and Early): MA (by dissertation only, often a 2-year course), MLitt (2-year) and PhD (3-year). National University of Ireland, Maynooth The Faculty of Celtic Studies offers two undergraduate degrees: one in Medieval Irish and Celtic Studies and another in Minority Languages (Celtic &Basque). The Faculty of Arts offers undergraduate degrees in Medieval Irish and Modern Irish. Classes are also offered in Old Irish and Welsh. There are also opportunities for postgraduate work. Available 1-year taught MAs include Early Medieval irish History and Sources, Old and Middle Irish, Comparative Celtic Linguistics. It is also possible to do an MA or a PhD entirely by research. Queen’s University Belfast The department of Irish and Celtic Studies in the School of Languages, Literatures and Art has both undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities. They offer a BA and a taught MA in Irish and Celtic Studies. They also offer research opportunities leading to the MPhil degree (2 years) or the PhD degree (3 years). Modern Irish is the focus in the department, but other Celtic languages are offered, including Scottish Gaelic, Welsh and Cornish. The Institute for Irish Studies offers an MA in Irish Studies, which is not focused on language like the MA in Irish and Celtic Studies, but it includes the opportunity to study Irish.
