Long-term and Degree Courses in Celtic Languages: North AmericaBoston College Boston College's Irish Studies Program offers a minor for undergraduates and several degrees for graduates. The MA (Master of Arts) is available in Irish national Studies or Irish Literature and Culture, and PhDs can be done in History or English with a focus on Irish history or literature. Irish language courses are offered every year. Welsh is also occasionally taught, under "special circumstances" (see http://fmwww.bc.edu/CollAS/LangProf.html). New York University New York University offers a minor in Irish Studies for undergraduates through their Irish Studies department, and it is also possible to study Irish topics while pursuing an MA or a PhD in other disciplines. CANADA St Francis Xavier University St FX, located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, offers a BA in Celtic Studies, through the Department of Celtic Studies. The language focus of the department is on Scottish Gaelic, but Irish is also available. The degree covers language, literature (some in translation) and history. St Mary's University This university in Halifax, Nova Scotia offers an undergraduate major and minor in Irish Studies. The Irish Studies Department offers language classes in Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh, and many other topics related to Irish, Scottish and Welsh culture. University College of Cape Breton UCCB offers a 3-year BA in Celtic Studies. The school is located in Cape Breton. There is not much in the way of detail at their web site, but if you are interested, you can request more information. The main site is UCCB. University of Ottawa The Celtic Studies Department offers a good range of language courses in Scottish Gaelic, Irish, Welsh and Breton. Breton is taught in French, while the others are taught in English. University of Toronto The Celtic Studies Department offers a BA and a minor in Celtic Studies, which includes classes in Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh languages and more. It is possible to pursue study in Celtic studies at the graduate level only through the Centre for Medieval Studies. CLASSES OFFERED OUTSIDE FULL PROGRAMS There are many more colleges and universities that offer classes in one or several Celtic languages, but no degree or concentration. These can often be used to fulfill general education or foreign language requirements, and might be a safer "taster" if you are not sure you want to commit to 100% Celtic-focused study.
