Jack Lemmon Remembered
He was known as the other half of The Odd Couple or even the other half of the Grumpy Old Men. Jack Lemmon's death, due to complications with cancer, has left the entire acting community with fond memories and a deep sense of pain. Shirley MacLaine, who starred with Jack in The Apartment and Irma La Douce said, "I can't believe he's gone - but to me he isn't. Anything I could say about this great human being and artist isn't enough. We have lost the profound master of emotional canvas-painting. Name the feeling, he could paint it with himself as the brush." In 1998, Ving Rhames won the 1998 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Movie. But he refused to accept the award, insisting that Jack (nominated in the same category) win for Twelve Angry Men. When Kevin Spacey won his 1999 Best Actor Oscar for American Beauty he dedicated it to Jack. Hank Azaria, who co-starred with him in the TV movie Tuesdays With Morrie said, "Just watching Jack Lemmon made me want to get into this business. He could bring grace and dignity to his work even when he was playing ungraceful, undignified people." William Friedkin, director of Twelve Angry Men said, "All I can tell you is that anyone who ever worked with Jack feels the same way. It has been a privilege to have had Jack in your life." It was just this time last year that Jack was expressing his own regret at losing his buddy, fellow actor Walter Matthau. In December 2000, Jack was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award but had to accept the honor over the telephone. He was being treated for a colon condition known as diverticulitis at the time. Jack Lemmon died at the age of 76.
