Comedy Loses Its Laughter
Walter Matthau, best known as the other half of The Odd Couple and Grumpy Old Men, died of a heart attack. Jack Lemmon, his frequent co-star and close friend, said, "I have lost someone I loved as a brother, as a closest friend, and a remarkable human being. We have also lost one of the best damn actors we'll ever see." Walter's been seen in such films as Dennis the Menace, I.Q. and Grumpier Old Men. He re-teamed with Meg Ryan from I.Q. to complete his most recent film, Hanging Up. Walter Matthau was 79.
Another Hollywood Breakup We love those Hollywood couples, don't we? Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin. John Travolta and Kelly Preston. Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid. Wait a minute. Meg and Dennis aren't Meg and Dennis anymore. They've announced through their publicist that they have agreed to a mutual separation. Dennis and Meg met on the set of Innerspace but didn't start dating until they joined up again for D.O.A. After Dennis recovered from his drug addiction, he and Meg were wed in 1991. In 1992, they had their only child, Jack Henry. Their rep won't say if the couple is planning to file for divorce. CBS = Can Bryant Stop CBS wants to know if Bryant Gumbel can stop insulting people. The Family Research Council wants an apology out of him after he insulted one of their own. Robert H. Knight was a guest on CBS's Early Show. Knight loathes the media and pop culture and says they corrupt modern society. As Bryant's guest was headed for the door and the camera was headed for weather, he called Knight an "f---ing idiot." What Bryant didn't know is the camera was still focused on him so every little syllable was quite clear. The council originally wanted his job. At the very least, CBS can state their ratings are less than poor so nobody probably saw the incident. Downey's Depression As if snorting all your money up your nose and losing major film deals isn't depressing enough, Robert Downey Jr. says jail isn't very much fun. He's still serving that three year prison sentence for drug possession. He could be released as early as November but he recently told Vanity Fair magazine that being confined is sending him into a deeper depression. He's been diagnosed as a manic depressive and doctors say he needs treatment not punishment. And the fact that Robert's sharing a prison cell with four other inmates and makes eight cents an hour on kitchen duty isn't helping. Go To Page: 1 2
