Meet Lady, by Carlene Anderson

This article is a part of:

Hello, my name is Lady and I was told by my mother that I am a cat. She didn't get a chance to tell me much more before she disappeared one day when I was about four weeks old. I was awfully cold and hungry not to mention scared. I couldn't find any of my littermates. I was all alone. Then a man found me and took me to his family. I was given a bottle of milk anytime I was hungry and was kept dry and warm. I learned how to purr real loud and to say thank you for saving me.

The family I was with had a little girl and (what I am assuming) was a dog. I think I'm supposed to be afraid of the dog, but I'm not sure. I know one thing for sure: I don't know how anyone can be friendly with anything that smells like that! He never gave himself a bath, and his breath made me want to cough up a hairball. But as long as he didn't chase me, I tolerated him.

The little girl would sometimes pull my tail or pick me up the wrong way and it hurt. But sometimes she would just sit and scratch me in all those places it is so hard to reach yourself. The loud purring would keep the scratches coming. I wanted to cuddle up with her so much at night when things would get a little scary, but the Mom and Dad didn't like that very much. I would try to sneak into her bedroom, but it seems that I always got caught. So finally they told me that I had to sleep in the garage! Do you know how cold it is out there at night? All those strange noises! I wouldn't get much sleep that's fur sure. I never understood why the dog got to sleep where it was nice and warm and safe, and not me. I know I didn't smell.

I tried to keep myself really clean. I also tried to be a good kitty and not get into trouble. Unfortunately there were the times when I would end up playing with something that I wasn't supposed to - like the time I accidentally unrolled the roll of toilet paper. How was I to know that if you hit it, it starts moving; which of course made me hit it even more. Then there was the time I was chasing my tail so fast that I ran into the lamp and knocked it over. Boy, I never knew I could run that fast! Or, what about the time the dog chewed up a sock and I got the blame. Now that's just not fair! Mainly, I just did cat things like sleeping a lot and grooming myself. I kept hoping that someone would offer a nice lap to take a nap on. I kept trying to jump up on a lap so maybe they would get the hint, but it didn't work. No laps for me! There should be something written in a Kitty Handbook that says laps are a necessity, and every kitty owner should be required to read that handbook.
