A journey to the truth

While walking through the county fair recently some well-meaning gentleman asked me if I was 100 percent assured of my salvation. I told him I was working on it meaning that I was working it out with fear and trembling (with God). He immediately jumped on the word "work" and told me I didn't have to do good works, that salvation is a gift from God and only through his grace we are saved.

I do believe salvation is a gift from God and it is only through his grace that we are saved. However, it is possible to fall from grace if we intentionally fail to follow Christ daily. Each day I ask God what he wants me to do. It's not a one-time deal - God calls us to follow him every day.

There is so much I wanted to tell this man, but didn't know how to put it into words. I just listened and moved on. I find many times that people like this man think Catholics are not saved and want to "save" them from the Roman Catholic Church. I often wish I could explain to them that the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ himself and how could it be wrong if Jesus started it. Yes there has been corruption, but only human corruption. Christ's Church still stands.

David Currie's book, Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic, outlines his journey from fundamentalism to the Catholic Church, the ancient Church founded by Jesus Christ. He speaks with an evangelical/fundamentalist slant because the book is meant to explain to his Protestant friends why he converted to Catholicism. It wasn't based on emotions and feelings - he was in search of the truth and found it in the Catholic Church.

This book, while aimed at non-Catholics or even anti-Catholics, is a good read for Catholics like me wanting to learn how to defend and explain my faith. And through the grace of God, next time I can explain it the next time I am asked if I am saved.

This book was published by Ignatius Press in 1996.
