Part 2 - Words to Live By

The Catechism is organized into four sections: The profession of faith [14]*, the sacraments (sacred actions) of faith [15], the life of faith [16], and prayer in the life of faith [17]. The Vatican's repetitive use of the phrase is intentional to emphasize the role of faith. This is a book of faith: faith in a heavenly Father who cares for us [303], faith that is challenged by suffering [272] and our limited understanding of God [273], faith that is considered a gift of the Holy Spirit that we can nourish by participating in a human community of faith [1102]. "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1)**

Reading the Catechism, I found that the traditional Catholic use of the word "economy" differs from our modern use having to do with the distribution of material goods and services. In the Catechism, read economy to mean "the works by which God reveals Himself."

Himself. Our belief is in one God. I had never before read anything like the Cathechism's implications of faith in one God. "It means coming to know God's greatness and majesty . . . . It means living in thanksgiving . . . . It means knowing the unity and true dignity of all men: everyone is made in the image and likeness of God . . . . It means making good use of created things . . . . It means trusting God in every circumstance . . . . A prayer of St. Teresa of Jesus wonderfully expressed this trust: Let nothing trouble you/Let nothing frighten you/Everything passes/God never changes/Patience/Obtains all/Whoever has God/Wants for nothing/God alone is enough." [223-227]

In times of want and/or adversity, it is hard to accept that God is enough. What may be lacking is a real desire for or love of heaven, God's Kingdom. Love of God and love of God's "place" of spirituality are different. A lot of people may "love God," but do they love God enough to give up their own "place" (their own ideas of comfort, style, or politics) when there is a conflict between their material or social values and the values of God's Kingdom. [2548-9]

In the Catholic Church, emphasis is on teaching the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament and the Beatitudes of the New Testament. "Blessed are the poor
