Fathers, St. Joseph is Our Model

mobile society? Are we a sure anchor for our family when we are facing relocation or some other major change in our family life?

A Humble Servant

Humility is not a highly prized virtue in our society. And, unfortunately the secular media tends to glamorize superstars in the sports and entertainment world, giving our children the impression that riches and fame are what really matter.

By comparison, Joseph was a poor carpenter who settled in a little village and humbly provided for the needs of his family. We can imagine him working in his modest carpenter's shop with Jesus day in and day out.

Scripture paints us a portrait of an unassuming man who does not put himself forward. Not a single one of his words is recorded, but his faith in action and humble service speak volumes.

He is there silently serving in the background at the birth of Jesus, the presentation in the temple, and the finding of Jesus at the age of twelve in the temple.

Instead of the brash and flashy superstar as a male icon, we sorely need this inspiring model of humble service. He reminds those of us who are fathers that our actions and attitude of service really do matter. Our children do notice, and our humble service can make a real difference in how they turn out.

Saint Joseph, pray for us - particularly for fathers and families. May all of us who are fathers be inspired by you as a man of faith and prayer, a provider and protector, as a humble servant of the Lord. Amen.
