A Little Good News
I don't think there's a fan of CART racing who doesn't like -- or at least admire -- Alex Zanardi. The guy hit CART with a bang, won a couple of championships, headed off to F-1 (where he didn't really get a fair shake), and then came back to CART with great expectations.
All that ended in a tragic accident as he was leading the first race on the new oval in Germany. That accident cost him his legs. But it didn't cost him his heart.
Zanardi came out of his accident with grace and courage, willing to pick up the hand that Fate dealt him and continue to play the game of Life. Every comment you hear from him confirms that.
And now some good news. Zanardi's rehabilitation has progress to the point where he can stand on artificial legs. Check the photo here, and read the story.
TRIUMPH FOR ZANARDI AT "CASCHI D'ORO" CELEBRATION
December 15th, 2001 - We were waiting that moment since last september when Alessandro lost both legs and finally that moment it's arrived, it was an incredible emotion to see Alessandro Zanardi to leave is wheelchair to stand up unaided. Full Story and More Photos.
And So Where Are We Now?
- No changes for Fernandez Racing, with team owner/driver Adrian Fernandez and Shinji Nakano piloting the two-car entry.
- If the Herdez Bettenhausen team fields an entry for 2002, the odds are that Mario Dominguez will drive for the group. Bet on it being a single car team.
- Marlboro Team Penske has left for the IRL.
- Mo Nunn Racing splits up, with Tony Kanaan running a Reynard Honda in CART and Nunn moving the Hollywood tobacco sponsorship to the IRL.
- It's a safe bet that Newman/Haas will continue with Cristiano da Matta and Chrisitan Fittipaldi in a two-car effort.
- All the talk is PacWest drops to a single car effort with Scott Dixon, but Honda has money (and no Penske), and so, given sponsorship, Roberto Moreno may be back.
- Another ol' timer down to a one-car effort, with Patrick Racing putting rookie Townsend Bell in a Toyota Reynard.
- Player's Forsythe has re-signed the two Canadians, Patrick Capentier and Alex Tagliani, to drive the cars sponsored by the Canadian cancer stick company.
- Oriol Servia had some good runs and will be back in the seat for Sigma Racing.
- Everyone who follows Target Chip Ganassi Racing is waiting for the other shoe to drop. The Chipster signed Kenny Brack away from Team Rahal, but now he needs to decide whether to keep Bruno Junquiera or Memo Gidley. Fans would probably vote for the popular Gidley, but Ganassi may follow the money. In this case, that means he has Bruno under contract for 2002 and would have to pay him anyway.
