The Other Shoe

Penske Racing is the most successful Indy car racing team in history with 110 race wins, highlighted by a record 11 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race victories, 11 National Championships, and 135 pole positions.

Tony George Statement About Penske Racing Plans

A statement from Indy Racing League President and CEO Tony George about the announcement Dec. 6 that Penske Racing will compete in open-wheel racing exclusively in the Indy Racing League starting in the 2002 season:

"The addition of Roger Penske, his team and his Marlboro sponsor to the Indy Racing League is a great plus to what is already the most exciting, most competitive racing series on the planet. What better affirmation could there be than to have the most successful team in American motorsports choose the Indy Racing League as its competitive platform? This is a strong indicator that our vision and plan is the right one for the future of American open-wheel racing and exemplifies the League's stability and growth. The addition of Marlboro Team Penske to our core of strong Indy Racing teams will make 2002 the most competitive year yet."

So writes Mark Cipolloni, Autoracing1.com's expert racing commentator.

"The price of poker went up in the Indy Racing League yesterday when CART’s bellwether squad Marlboro Team Penske defected to the IRL."
Racer's Eric Mauck writing on Speedvision.

"Indy Racing League president Tony George said Saturday that Marlboro Team Penske might not be the last member of Championship Auto Racing Teams to switch to his series for the 2002 season."
So says Curt Cavin in the Indianapolis STAR.
