The Week That Was
If you were to make a quick run-through of the teams that participated in
CART during 2001, you might be wondering who'll be back for next year. Here's the
status quo from a fan's point of view -- a fan who thinks rumors are fun and enjoys a bit of gossip.
- Arciero-Blair Racing - An also-ran team last year, but with a promising new driver, Alex Barron, getting some seat time. No word if the team will field a car in 2002.
- Fernandez Racing with Adrian Fernandez and Shinji Nakano - Fernandez, the team owner, had some good races this year, and he apparently has plenty of south-of-the-border money behind him. Word is he'll field two cars in 2002.
- Forsythe Championship Racing - Toast. Byran Herta looking for a ride.
- Herdez Bettenhausen with Michel Jourdain Jr. - Another second line team. No announcement yet if Jourdain holds onto his seat or even if the team will be back next year.
- Marlboro Team Penske with Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves - Every reporter who owns a computer says The Captain is packing his bags for a move to the IRL, but there's also reports Honda wants Penske to keep de Ferran in CART to defend its title. Castroneves entry into IROC, though, seems to indicate he won't be obligated to CART's schedule.
- Mo Nunn Racing - Word is Tony Kanaan is re-signed. Dollars to a donut, Mo will be running one car in CART. Remember he already snagged the IRL Rookie of the Year for a Mo Nunn Racing, Hollywood-sponsored effort in that series.
- Newman/Haas Racing with Christian Fittipaldi and Cristiano da Matta - No news or even rumors circulating around this team. A good guess is they'll be back as is for 2002.
- PacWest Racing Group Scott Dixon - Down to a single car effort with the impressive 2001 Rookie of the Year.
- Patrick Racing with Townsend Bell - Down to a single car effort, with Roberto Moreno not getting a ride unless Patrick can find sponsorship.
- Player's/Forsythe Racing with Alex Tagliani and Patrick Carpentier - No apparent changes.
- Sigma Autosport wtih Oriol Servia - No apparent changes.
- Target Chip Ganassi Racing with Kenny Brack - The Chipster snagged Brack from Rahal, but there's no word on a second driver. That leaves last year's final pair -- Memo Gidley and Bruno Junqueria -- on pins and needles. Chip took his sponsor Target to NASCAR. Could it be possible he'll drop to a single car in CART and field a car in the IRL?
