By Anne Proffit
FONTANA, Calif., November 4, 2001 - Cristiano da Matta and the #6 Texaco/Havoline/Kmart Lola/Toyota team played the mileage vs. power game to their advantage today, snaring the winner's $1 million prize in the season-ending Marlboro 500 presented by Toyota at California Speedway. This shortened 220-lap contest ended at twilight, after unexpected rain in the morning delayed the race start until 1:25pm, nearly an hour after its scheduled green flag.
