Is CART A Goner?

Rumors, We Love Rumors

Robin Miller floated the first balloon, and then Dr. Jerry Punch, ESPN's racing correspondence mentioned it. Miller had a twinkle in his eye, as if he was teasing or as if he knew people weren't going to take him seriously. The rumor? Kenny Brack, CART's Swift Swede, is headed for NASCAR.

Believe it?

Not really, not me, anyway. At least, I'm more likely to believe Punch's version. The good doctor said not to be surprised if Brack shows up on the entry list of the 2002 Daytona 500.

That I can believe. As Punch noted, Brack does well in IROC. And in that series, Brack gets along well with and has the respect of the other IROC drivers.

And, okay, the guy's won the Indy 500, and he's been IRL champion, but he's not exactly cleaned up in CART. But is it really time for him to move to NASCAR?

One thing certain, Brack's a litte old for Formula One, and so the next world to conquer may be the full-fender lead sleds from Daytona.

When Will It End?

One writer after another suggests that CART and the IRL should merge. Another group types away insisting that the two groups should split the blanket -- the IRL taking the ovals, the CART boys running the road courses and street courses. CART, of course, seems to have a proclivity to make the wrong choices if left to its own devices, talking of a street race in Denver after losing the right to run at the big Michigan oval, always one of the series' most exciting races.
