CART FedEx race fans may be in that quiet period that the old wive's tale reminds us comes just before the storm. There's little news as CART prepares for its season opener, the March 11 Tecate Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey Presented by Herdez in Monterrey, Mexico on a 2.1 mile street course. The series did announce the appointment of a new Chief Steward, a man who will replace the legendary Wally Dallenbach, Sr. CART NAMES VETERAN RACER CHRIS KNEIFEL CHIEF STEWARD OF FEDEX CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES Championship Auto Racing Teams announced today that veteran race car driver Chris Kneifel has been named Chief Steward of CART’s FedEx Championship Series.
Kneifel, 39, is an accomplished racer who was in victory circle just last month after winning the 24 Hours of Daytona as a member of the Chevrolet factory-backed Pratt & Miller Engineering Corvette team. Kneifel raced competitively in the CART FedEx Championship Series from 1982-84, starting 19 races over those three years and finishing tied for 17th in the final series points standings in 1983. His career-best finish was an eighth on three occasions. If you watch the tube with any regularity, you've probably noticed commercials teasing the April opening of Sly Stallone's new movie, Driven. Sounds suspicously like Days of Thunder, that slightly off-kilter and generally unrealistic paen to NASCAR, doesn't it? I'm cynical, true, but I like good movies. And I especially like good movies about auto racing. There are truly only a few that encompass a strong story line about racing and racers. Most tack on a romance, a rivalry, and a wreck or two to add a little glamour or tragedy to the narrative. Here's a list of some I've watched recently.
