Mr. Miller Has Left the Building

It lurks there in the background, but we don't pay much attention to it until it jumps up and bites us.

Some call it just business, watching out for the interests of the stockholders, making sure there's no red ink on the bottom line.

But if you tend toward the cynical like me, you sum it up with Murphy's Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.

It was racing reporter Robin Miller who learned that lesson all over again last week. Miller, a veteran preacher on things that go fast whom most fans either love or love to hate, lost his pulpit.

Some fan forums bubbled with glee, for Miller hasn't been aftaid to take on some of the racing world's icons, but, when Megacorporation - in this case, the Gannett newspaper conglomerate which acquired the Star last year - triumphs over an individual, I'm inclined to react with a certain measure of bitterness.

Longtime sportswriter Robin Miller abruptly left The Indianapolis Star Wednesday -- he said because he was fired. But citing the confidentiality of personnel decisions, the newspaper's management wouldn't go beyond acknowledging that the auto racing writer and columnist, who was at the paper for more than three decades and was one of its most distinctive voices, is gone.

Robin Miller Fired by Indianapolis Star Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 11 — Controversial sports writer Robin Miller was fired yesterday by the Indianapolis Star after a 33-year career at the paper. Although he covered a variety of sports, Miller is perhaps best known for coverage of auto racing that is as irreverent as it is insightful. Along the way he has often locked horns with the biggest names in the sport, from A.J. Foyt to Tony George, and has lived (and laughed) to tell the tale.


Do you reckon The Chipster just ran out of money and got these guys on loan from the big bucks guys across the pond? Makes sense to me.

No seats in F-1, and so we send 'em over to the good ol' USA to season 'em a bit. Ouila! Fait accompli!

I wish no one ill, but I think a smarter move would've been to keep Vasser and bring only one CART rookie on board. But what do I know? I've never sat in an Indy car.
