Mr. Miller Has Left the BuildingIt lurks there in the background, but we don't pay much attention to it until it jumps up and bites us. Some call it just business, watching out for the interests of the stockholders, making sure there's no red ink on the bottom line. But if you tend toward the cynical like me, you sum it up with Murphy's Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules. It was racing reporter Robin Miller who learned that lesson all over again last week. Miller, a veteran preacher on things that go fast whom most fans either love or love to hate, lost his pulpit. Some fan forums bubbled with glee, for Miller hasn't been aftaid to take on some of the racing world's icons, but, when Megacorporation - in this case, the Gannett newspaper conglomerate which acquired the Star last year - triumphs over an individual, I'm inclined to react with a certain measure of bitterness.
Here's a link to Speedvision's take on Miller being pitched overboard after 33 years at the Star.
Do you reckon The Chipster just ran out of money and got these guys on loan from the big bucks guys across the pond? Makes sense to me. No seats in F-1, and so we send 'em over to the good ol' USA to season 'em a bit. Ouila! Fait accompli! I wish no one ill, but I think a smarter move would've been to keep Vasser and bring only one CART rookie on board. But what do I know? I've never sat in an Indy car.
