Hey, Jimmy! Whatcha Doin'?

It's an off-week for the Championship Auto Racing Teams, with the next event scheduled Down Under on Sunday, October 16th, at Surfer's Paradise.

The thing I wanted to know when I fired up the computer today is, 'What's up with Jimmy Vasser testing a NASCAR stockcar for Chip Ganassi?

What isn't up is an official report from Team Target Chip Ganassi's Web site.

Ah, then. Let's look around.

The big news on the official CART site is a story putting a shine on the next Golden Boy. After all, Juan Pablo Montoya is heading for F-1 and Alex Zanardi lurks in limbo.

"The fight for a place in the CART FedEx Championship Series is a fierce one, and the Dayton Indy Lights series is as competitive as any on the planet. This year, four drivers in particular -- Scott Dixon, Townsend Bell, Casey Mears and Jason Bright -- have demonstrated they are ready to take it to the next level."

Hmmm, let's try NASCAR's site. The answer? Nearly 1700 responses, mostly about other "Jimmys," with 2 responses for Vasser relating to -- you knew it, didn't you? -- collectibles.

Sorry. I don't want to add to NA$CAR's coffers.

A switch to Seventhgear. Nope, nothing there either. Well, actually nothing but what we already knew, and a short note that Jimmy's CART hopes aren't entirely dead.

"With Vasser's win, his name has jumped to the top of the hot list. 5 teams have been seen talking with Jimmy and there are probably more. Fernandez's Team, PacWest, Walker, Mo Nunn, and, believe it or not, Newman/Haas. Apparently da Matta's contract may not have officially been signed yet, and Haas is still making the rounds to replace Andretti."

All right. I'm nothing if not semi-Web-savvy. I put "Jimmy Vasser" in my favorite search engine. Hey, the guy's gotta Web site. But don't go there unless you want to see two simple jpegs. Someone's sitting on a domain name. I wonder if it's Jimmy, thinking Web designer for a post-racing career move.

Okay. There's always Speedvision. At least on the 'Net. I just wish I had Speedvision on my cable system.

Ah, success!

"Jimmy Vasser traded his CART uniform for the flared legs of a NASCAR pilot's driving suit Friday, testing one of Ganassi Racing's Chevrolet Monte Carlos at Lakeland Speedway in Florida, but according to team sources the test was anything but an audition for a 2001 ride."
