Heading for Homestead

The cars look the same. The drivers have shuffled around somewhat, but the champion is back with the same team to defend his crown.

The same team, sure, but Target/Chip Ganassi RacingTarget/Chip Ganassi Racing owner Chip Ganassi, ever restless and ever opportunistic, is asking the quick Columbian to work his magic with a new engine-chassis combination. "The combination of a Honda engine, Firestone Tires and a Reynard Chassis has helped make Target/Chip Ganassi Racing one of the most successful teams in the history of Champ Car racing," says the team's official Web site. Nevertheless, the word is Chip's convinced his champ he can win in Toyota-powered Lola.

You think Dan Gurney will get a thank you card in appreciation for all the tough development work when Ganassi wins his first race with a Toyota?

Mid-February also brought the news that veteran CART owner Steve Horne, president of Forsythe Racing, announced he was leaving the team. Forsythe Racing fields Honda Swifts piloted by Bryan Herta, who reportedly will stay on despite Horne's departure.

Although the team doesn't have an official Web site, you can find several Internet reports that Michel Jourdain, Jr. will be on track with an entry for Bettenhausen Motorsports in spite of the recent tragic death of team owner Tony Bettenhausen, Jr. in an airplane crash. Now operating under the name of Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports and fielding Mercedes-Benz Lolas, the team has been testing at Sebring, according to Seventhgear.

They've been talkin' the talk over the winter, but come March 26th, owners and drivers both (not to mention mechanics and pit crews) gotta walk the walk when the CART series opens at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the 1.5 mile oval at the southern tip of the Sunshine State.
