Racin' Toward the Season

The groundhog has stuck his nose out of his den, the annual sign that CART race fans can stop passing rumors and can start thinking about "spring training" and the upcoming race season.

Spring Training begins February 8th at Miami's Homestead Motorsports Complex, Hurricane Andrew's gift to auto racing and the venue of the season-opener on March 26th.

There's a twenty-plus race season on the schedule, a good mixture of ovals, road and street courses and including the Indianapolis 500.

CART meets IRL back home again in Indiana? You can bet the farm CART teams will making the rest of the schedule, from Japan to Canada to Australia and even to Cleveland, but just who among the CART guys will bolt together an IRL ride and show up in Indiana remains a matter of speculation.

Any race fan has got to love rumors, and whether any of the big names in CART plans an Indy run is the juiciest.

There's lots of other talk, though.

How about Mr. Donut, Alex Zanardi? The popular former CART champion won't be piloting a Williams ride in F-1 this year. Is he coming back to CART?

CART seems poised to add new races. Will some or all of them go overseas?

What's up with a possible engine formula change? The present suppliers have tons of technology behind the turbocharged versions now on the tracks. Can CART find a common ground with the IRL's normally aspirated engine formula?

CART moves into the 2000 season with 16 teams - some multi-car, some single car. A good number of the premier teams - like Team KOOL Green, Target/Chip Ganassi and Newman/Haas - field the same pair of experienced drivers. Others have brought new talent aboard - Team Rahal obviously expects great things from 1999 IRL champion Kenny Brack. Whether it was big bucks or big exposure that lured Brack to CART, you can be Bobby Rahal wants wins.

Fans will be able to catch all the action on the two networks with the most experience in telecasting races: ESPN and ABC.
