Saab Celebrates 50

This is the year of the Saab's 50th anniversary. Saab started before WWII as an aircraft company building airplanes. After WWII ended and the need for airplanes was not as high, Saab decided to try their hand at building cars. Saab engineer Gunnar Ljungstrom designed a chassis/engine layout and adapted it to the needs of Sweden's gravel roads and cold winters. He chose front-wheel drive, water cooling, a heavy-gauge steel body and an aerodynamic shape for efficiency. A 2-stroke, 2 cylinder engine was chosen because it was easy to start and cheap and simple to build.

The first Saab production cars were not actually sold to the public until 1950. The original basic shape of the Saab continued until 1980 when the Saab96 was designed. Since then, other designs include the Sonetts, 99's, Revolutionary 99 Turbos, the 900 series, the elite 9000s and currently the new glamorous 9-3.

The Saab 9-3 is a sporty luxury car with new color-keyed bumpers, sporty lower air intakes and a front spoiler with integrated front fog light lights and cornering lamps. There are more than 1,000 technical improvements and interior design changes in the 9-3. The new models are powered with a 2.0 liter engine, 185-horsepower, turbocharged engine which combine to give quick acceleration with good fuel economy.

The 9-3 whose appearance is distinct and aggressively priced at approximately $25,000. It is sure to be a top car seller, especially for people who drive through winter snows or in mountains, and prefer something stylish, lighter and more fun to drive than the standard pick-up truck.

Congratulations to Saab for 50 years of producing a well known and distinct car which will continue to be around for many more decades to come.
