The McLaren F1 has been touted as the fastest street legal production car ever built. And justly so... it is rated with the most horsepower - 627 bhp, the highest top speed at 231 mph, and the quickest 0 - 60 mph at just 3.4 seconds. The engine was designed specifically for the McLaren by BMW in Munich. The 6.1 liter engine has 48 valves, 4 cams, and a 6 speed transmission.
Not only is the McLaren the fastest car ever, it is the most unique in its body styling. The chassis and body are almost entirely constructed of carbon fiber which helped keep the McLaren's weight down to a mere 2,840 lbs. (nearly 400 lbs. Less than the Corvette). The F1 was designed with dihedral doors (doors that swing up) and placement of the driver's seat directly in the middle of the car. Passenger seats and/or baggage compartments are on each side of the driver's seat slightly set back. Other features of the McLaren include: · Trunk mounted 10 disk CD player created just for the F1 · Left and right side luggage bins just ahead of the rear wheels · An onboard tool kit containing gold plated titanium tools Only 100 of these cars have been produced, including 20 racing versions. The list price for the McLaren is $890,000.00, but with shipping fees, taxes, and other costs, brings the total price to $1,131,000.00. It is no wonder at that cost, the company throws in a large tool set and rolling cabinet for the garage. Only a few of us will have the ultimate experience of owning the McClaren F1, the most exciting car produced in the 20th Century. (I will only own one in my dreams). Go To Page: 1
