Over the years I have tried different forms of exercises to stay in shape. I have done everything from aerobics to weight lifting. Unfortunely many exercises are difficult for me due to physical and health limitations. Such as weak muscles make it difficult for me to lift heavy weights. Also because of my heart condition I am unable to participate in team sports. I am always looking for new activities to improve my self. I research programs looking for my needs of low impact, and increasing flexibility.
I discovered hatha yoga it is a spiritual work out for the mind and body. Through standing and sitting positions the body muscles are stretch and lengthen. Yoga also relaxes the mind meditatively while releasing stress. You can also build your mental skills such as concentration and alertness. Since doing yoga I have noticed more flexibility in my movements and decrease tightness in my joints. Yoga can help people with chronic illness deal with pain and stiffness. People with certain disabilities like cerebral palsy, autism and Down syndrome can improve their concentration and balance through yoga. For those with limited mobility like me can use props like a strap and blocks to do the required poses. The end result for every one is increase mental clarity, emotional stability and a sense of overall well being. My favorite yoga videotape is The Joy of Yoga with Sara Ivanhoe. But start with the yoga for dummies video series to learn the poses.
This workout also has a meditative aspect that I really enjoy. I use mediation every morning to connect with my self on a spirit level reminding my self to be positive, happy and be good to others. I also use it to see what my purpose is and what directions I am heading into in life.
