As a business traveler, I get to see all parts of the Carolinas. It is safe to say that there are few towns in either North or South Carolina that I have not seen. One of the advantages of the type of business travel that I do is that I do get to see so many different places. Sometimes the towns and cities that I visit for the first time live up to my expectations and sometimes they fall short. On rare occasions a town will completely take me by surprise and far exceed any expectaions I have prior to my vist. Such was the case with Brevard, North Carolina.
I first visited Brevard about five years ago. At the time, the only facts I knew about the town were that it was located in the mountains and that there was a small college located there. I had planned a two night stay in the Brevard so that I could visit some potential customers in the area. The drive into Brevard was enjoyable thanks to the nice mountain scenery. Once I arrived in town, I checked into my hotel and asked the front desk clerk if there were any restaurants that she could recommend. She recommended several and as it turned out the one I chose (Hobnob)was located in downtown Brevard (the more historic part of town). It was during my drive to the restaurant that I began to realize just how special Brevard is. Brevard's downtown district is lined with coffee shops, art galleries, bed & breakfast inns, and unique local restaurants. It is the kind of place that makes a stranger feel at home. Before I even got to the restaurant I had the urge to park my car and take a look around. When you travel for a living, constantly being on the move and away from home can wear you down. After a while, one town can begin to look like all the others. This was definitely not the feeling I got in Brevard. I found the atmosphere and energy in Brevard's downtown to be quite invigorating. When it came time for me to leave I knew I wanted to come back again soon. Since then, Brevard has become one of my favorite Carolina towns to visit. Each year I look forward to my visits to this special place. The atmosphere in Brevard benefits from a combination of the surrounding mountain scenery, the fact that Brevard College is located there, and its proximity to Pisgah National Forrest. From most parts of town the surrounding Appalachian mountains can be seen in the distance. Like in any other mountain town, the natural surrounding scenery helps put the visitor in a relaxed state of mind. For a town of its size, Brevard boasts a surprisingly thriving arts scene. The Brevard Music Center offers musical training in a variety of disciplines to young musicians during a seven week course each summer and the participating students along with instructors and guest musicinas offer over 80 concerts during that time. Brevard College also has strong art, music, and theater programs and therefore attracts many artists to the area. Go To Page: 1 2
