In Memoriam 9-11

Nevertheless, that is our emotional makeup; at least that is the way I experience it.

Recently, I came across a poem that seems a fitting memorial for the victims of the terrorist attacks that eventful day. These lines from Rainer Maria Rilke,'s Buddha In Glory connect beautifully our mortal fear of death with the true immortality so many of us sense when we look into the heavens:

A billion stars go spinning through the night
blazing high about your head
but, in you is the presence that will be
when all the stars are dead.

We humans stand as we have stood for millennia on hilltop or seashore watching the brilliance of those "billion stars," knowing in some hidden part of our consciousness that these lights--what the Christian Bible calls the firmament--reflect the glory of the Creator, but usually only dimly aware of the presence that selfsame consciousness shares with the force that moves heaven and earth.

Such is the monument I see for the people and heroes of 9-11 and for the living also; to be reminded of our true cosmic home, our immortal presence. . .the eternal now. . . each time we gaze at the heavens.
