Meditation 101
Meditation 101"Consider your intentions and your meditations as part of what is done within the context of 'prayer'...'prayer' is moving into a personal relationship with Divine Intelligence. It is impossible to have prayer without power."
Gary Zukav, The Seat of the Soul
Meditation seems to be one of the 'buzz' words for the 21st century. From self-help gurus to yoga practicing movie stars, everyone is endorsing the practice of daily meditation as a source of healing for today's hectic lifestyle. Still, while you may feel compelled to meditate, you may not be sure of how to get started. This article will help to outline the many benefits of meditation and give you a simple exercise for daily meditation.
Why Meditate?
Inner Peace
Meditation is a form of personal ritual. This ritual helps to create a space where we can be at peace.
Reduced Stress
The act of meditating brings stillness to your physical body. When you meditate, you stop what you were doing, you regulate your breathing, you take deeper breaths, and thus your heart rate is steadier and your blood pressure is lowered.
Connecting with Intuition
We all have an inner 'guidance' system called intuition. It is there to guide you and help you reach your true potential. In this day and age, the material world often leads us to dismiss our intuition. Meditation can reconnect us with this forgotten 'extra sense'.
(Think of meditation as an exercise for the 'muscles' of intuition. When meditation is practiced on a regular basis, then the act of tapping into your intuition becomes natural and easy.)
Insight and Purification
Meditation helps to keep your mind and your feelings calm throughout the day.
If you meditate first thing in the morning, then you will find that you will want to maintain that sense of well being and insightfulness during the rest of your waking hours.
Stressful situations will still come your way, but you will feel a purity of thought that can help you stay focused and peaceful. The more you meditate, the more you will understand what is happening around you.
Where do I start?
Many people are searching for something simple to get them started on a path to meditation. I often recommend the following exercise as a way to connect with their authentic presence and inner guides. This one is especially helpful in bringing about feelings of inner peace and happiness.
'Five Minutes Exercise'
Society tells us that we should strive for material things and feel dissatisfied with our current state of being. It seems we are never worthy of feeling content.
