Caribbean Caving: A “Can’t Miss” Experience

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic's El Pomier caves are an archaeologist's Eden. With over 4,000 wall paintings, 5,300 rock drawings, 600 pictograms, and plenty of bats, El Pomier is an historic wonderland offering hours of exploration and endless delights. An entrance fee of $5RD is required, and a knowledgeable local guide is recommended.

Barbados

Animal Flower Cave and Harrison's Cave are among Barbados' distinctly different offerings.

Animal Flower is the seaside cave offering anemones and various wildlife in numerous seaside pools. However, this seaside location has its drawbacks as stormy conditions can close the cave and wet conditions make for slippery climbing. An entrance fee of $3B is charged, and further information is offered at 439-8797.

Harrison's Cave is the beginning caver's mecca complete with electric train, restaurant, shop, small Amerindian artifact display, and plenty of local guides. The 20-minute visit presents plenty of well-lit stalactites, stalagmites, waterfalls, and lakes. With an admission of only $8B, it's well worth the expense and the trip for an information-rich tour of spectacular surroundings.
