Talking About "CANCER" - Page 2

Most of the time I tried to stay positive, yet sometimes I needed to talk about my fear of dying, and being tired of chemotherapy and radiation. And sometimes even wanting to give up and praying that my journey through cancer was over. And then there were times when I had conquered a fear and wanted to share it with someone, and not always finding someone who really understood. When I finally accepted that I could die from my cancer a weight was lifted off my shoulders. Yet it was very hard for those close to me to hear that.

"To Family And Friends"

As hard as it may be at times to listen...please try to, and try not to be judgemental. As a patient it was hard for me to hear "Don't feel that way, or you'll be as good (healthy) as new before long." That last one was always the one that bothered me the most. I believed only God knew if and when I would be healthy again. And share how you feel with the patient. Help us understand where your coming from, and let us know that you are also afraid too. Sometimes it's good for the patient to forget about their problems for a little while and to help their loved ones.

To The Patient

Don't be afraid to talk about how your feeling. Dealing with emotions is a very important part of fighting the cancer. If family or friends have a hard time listening to you, be patient because they also have many fears. Find someone to talk to: a minister, a counslor, another cancer survivor. Find a cancer support group and do whatever it takes to deal with your emotions. Don't be afraid to share even the negative emotions. It's okay to talk about fears of dying, or the fears of treatment. Always remember you don't have to be alone on this journey through cancer. I'm also a great listener if anyone needs to talk. Until next time my thoughts and prayers are with you. L.P.
