IS CANADA IMMUNE TO TERRORISM?

© Mary M. Alward

A few weeks ago, fiction turned to reality when terrorists attacked the USA. September 11, 2001, is a day that no one will ever forget. Though we’re trying our best to get our lives back on track, the FBI and CIA warn that it is a 100% probability that there are more attacks to come.

Since Canada is the USA’s most prominent trading partner, it is inevitable that we too will be hit. The Islamist terrorists – Bin Laden and his cohorts – hate all Americans. They have already targeted Belgium, Britain and France.

Of course at present, the USA is Bin Laden’s and the al Queda’s main target but if security is too tight and they are unsuccessful there, Canada would be a prime target. These groups do not really differentiate between the USA and Canada. They do not have any compassion, therefore caring less if they kill innocent people, including women and children.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) knows that Canada is a likely target of terrorists. In 1999, CSIS released a paper saying that it was not “if” but “when” Canada would be hit. So far, we’ve been lucky. The CSIS has stated casualties will number between thousands and tens of thousands.

The CSIS warned that apocalyptic religious cults are of special concern, as are right wing extremists. These organizations find Canadians abhorrent and want to do the most possible damage to westerners. The CSIS pointed a finger at Arab extremists saying their hatred for people of North America makes them the most likely to strike.

As the days and weeks since September 11 have passed, I have become more angry to think that terrorists had the gall to strike America, where freedom has always prevailed. To think they would strike again without blinking an eye makes me even angrier. How dare they attack our way of life in order to gain power and control by fear?

The USA was horrified and shocked to learn that terrorists had been living quiet lives within the borders of their country for years. Canadians best open their eyes. Terrorists have infiltrated our countries by the thousands. They are living quiet and prosperous lives on quiet cul-de-sacs. Their children go to school with our children. One well-known terrorist lives in the same city as I do. He entered Canada illegally and eventually was able to bring his wife and children to live here as well. When he was found out and arrested ten years ago, the Canadian government issued a deportation order, which he quickly appealed. The Canadian people protested. If he were returned to his country of origin, he would be executed.
